Graylyn

We spoke briefly with Vic Lebsock on 7/10/08. He stated that in his meeting with Don Reuter, assistant director of Planning and Administration with NC Parks and Recreation, a possible solution was discussed at the Reedy Creek and Crabtree Creek area but there were issues to work through. A solution for Graylyn is not in the near future. Mr Lebsock stated he would have more details in a week or so.

This weekend, several more parking places were eliminated on Trenton Road that people used to access the Reedy Creek side of Umstead Park. No more than 5-6 parking places remain.

In addition, there is construction going on on the farm on Reedy Creek Rd adjacent to Umstead.

Is there going to be parking provided at the entrance or are we going to lose access entirely?

I have been using this area of the park for over 20 years and this would be a "diaster" for myself and hundreds of other bikers, joggers, walkers and families and dogs.

We had heard about the additional loss of parking at this area. Like yourself, we had been using one of the accesses that has now been eliminated and cannot get to the park except on weekends. We did not get detailed information when we spoke to Mr Lebsock but will be recontacting him soon to see what possible solutions were discussed. We will post them as soon as we have them. In the interim, there are two things you can do. First, contact Scott Letchworth and Don Reuter of NC Parks and Recreation, NCDOT and your local elected officials. Second, check out Joe Miller's blog archives (News & Observer Get Out & Get Fit) for his posting earlierthis month on Graylyn road for additional information. I can understand the paving of Reedy Creek/Trenton. That road does and always has gotten a fair amount of traffic and that increased with the back entrance to SAS. But I feel it was the influence of the million dollar home owners that closed that entrance. Maybe Umstead will step up and make the area where the old shelter was a gravel parking lot. Now Graylyn and the other end of Reedy Creek Road is another story....Graylyn = dead end road with property bordering a state park = million dollar homes = power and influence of the dollar. Reedy Creek = 2 home owners on a dead end road (one of the home owners is a avid biker) = a huge waste of taxpayers money. I just seems strange that out of all the roads that need improving, the DOT still has a problem being cycling friendly. DOT and the City of Raleigh could learn from Cary and when a road is improved, add a bike lane.
