Signed Petition Sent To Your Representatives

The following letter accompanied the signatures and comments from our petition:

The Access Umstead Committee was formed in response to strong concerns voiced by many Umstead State Park users about the continued loss of safe, convenient access to the park after the elimination of parking at the Reedy Creek Road and Graylyn Drive entrances. With plans to pave Old Reedy Creek Road, its future as an access is deemed uncertain at best. Many Triangle residents feel that their viewpoints went unrepresented as these decisions were being made and that their needs were not considered as these plans moved forward.
We provided an on-line petition as a forum for the public to voice their concerns about the impact that this restricted access to Umstead has had on the local community. In less than a week, the petition, which can be found at www.thepetitionsite.com/petition/609803273, has enabled more than 1100 individuals to voice their concerns about the impact that the restricted access has had on their lives. Most have expressed the need for a reasonable solution for safe, convenient access to the park with restored parking at the Reedy Creek Road and Graylyn Drive entrances and preserved parking at the Old Reedy Creek Road entrance.
Please take the time to review the comments in this petition to learn how residents feel about this issue. They feel ignored and unrepresented and are looking to their elected officials to enable a solution allowing greater access to Umstead in the near future. We look forward to your efforts toward a common sense resolution to this issue and know that the people will remember those representatives who have made a difference.

We believe that this signed petition makes a strong case to our elected representatives that something must be done to provide safe and convenient access to Umstead State Park.

We expect to hear something soon from the representatives who received the petition. We will provide you with their feedback as we receive it.

Thank you all for your support!

Thanks for your hard work! The letter is nicely worded. I also sent a message to Ty Harrell. He was kind enough to thank me right away for writing and said that he would be reviewing the details and be back in touch.

I have heard back from Senator Cowell's office and her office states that " While Senator Cowell has no formal position on this matter at this time (our office is still in the process of information gathering), she intends to work toward an eventual outcome in which the concerns of all interested parties have been heard, and to the extent feasible, met." Her office also states that Senator Cowell met with a parks advocate this week (now that could be a person that is for parking or against parking...who knows?) Her office said that they would be back in touch as more information is gathered.

If you are concerned about this matter, continue to write to your representatives and ask what they are specifically doing to help resolve this matter.
